Step-wise procedure for conducting a research on Furniture Design

In this article, we will discuss the steps for carrying out a research on the proposed topic. This research will help us evaluate if the concept of recycled furniture is workable and whether it could be profitable as compared to the New modern furniture made from new materials.

Step One:

Study the process of making recycled furniture. This would include studying the materials for the furniture, the factories, the energy resources required for the manufacture, amount of skilled and unskilled labour and finally the costs.

Step two:

Where have they been used? Study the successful examples of the use of recycled furniture in various countries and analyse the reasons behind their success.

It is also important to consider the negative aspects of the same. It is important to know why people wouldn’t want to prefer recycled furniture and that should be very clear.

Step three:

Remember for any venture to become a success, it has to be profitable. If it is not, then nobody will care to pay attention towards it. This applies for both the consumer as well as the manufacturer.

Analysis of the profit and loss for a company manufacturing recycled materials for the furniture has to be done. It is important to know whether these run in loss or in profit which will give you an idea of  the interest that people show towards using recycled furniture.

This project was given to us by the University in the first year of the Architecture course. This is a project where we could explore our creativity to the fullest. At the beginning of our course, we are not much aware of the conventional forms or logical design solutions. We are extremely creative when we are unaware of the actual process of transforming our project into reality but later on, as we progress with our course, we tend to restrict ourselves. Anyway, we will not get into a discussion on that topic.

So, this is how we go around designing the Artist’s House. Here are the two major steps:

Case study of Luxurious Homes

Coming to the case study part, case study is like the backbone of our design. We have to study the existing structures to determine the requirements. Case studies are necessary not just for an Architecture student but this is a part of design process which the Architect has to carry out for his entire life.

As I have mentioned in the title above “Case study of Luxurious Homes”, the case study of an Artist’s House is limited to Luxurious Homes because it involves creativity. So studying more of creative places helps us explore our own creative genius.

What do you do when you go on a Case study?

Case study means study of a case (project) which includes all its elements of design. The structure (home) that you are studying has various advantages and disadvantages which you have to work on. Earlier, in one of my articles, we discussed the detailed process of performing a case study. Those factors also have to be included into this case study process.

What is “Green Approach”?

It is difficult to define Green building Architecture. Although we could define what the green approach could be like. It takes into consideration the impact of design of buildings on the environment. Constructing a building requires resources. For example, materials for construction, fuel, users engagement in design etc. All of these factors are considered in Green building architecture. They form the backbone of this type of approach.

Designing green buildings has become a motto to many design companies and individual designers. It is important to pay attention to the conflicting issues that arise out of design. Every design decision needs to be thought with depth since it has environmental implications which could be harmful to us.

Measures for green buildings can be divided into four areas:

  1. Reduction in energy consumption
  2. Environmental damage prevention by reducing external pollution
  3. Reduction in embodied energy and prevent resource depletion
  4. Indoor air quality (and hence maintain good health)

One of the excellent examples of Green Architecture is “Aliens Space Station”.
